The Vietnamese athletics team won three gold medals and broke a 24 year-old Southeast Asian (SEA) Games record on Thursday in the women’s 4x400m relay.

Nguyen Thi Oanh, Nguyen Thi Thuy, Quach Thi Lan and Nguyen Thi Huyen claimed a gold medal in the sprint relay, clocking in at 3 minutes 31.46 seconds. This broke the record of 3 minutes 35.53 seconds set by Thai runners at the 1991 SEA Games in the Philippines.

Earlier today, Vietnamese athlete Duong Van Thai won the men’s 1,500m event with a time of 3 minutes 47.04 seconds.

This is Thai’s best result, but it is still two seconds slower than the current record established by his Vietnamese compatriot Nguyen Dinh Cuong two years ago.

The other gold medal went to Do Thi Thao, who was the fastest runner in the finals of the women’s 1,500m race at 4 minutes 28.39 seconds.

On June 10, the Vietnamese athletics team garnered a total of five gold medals, including Nguyen Thi Huyen in the women’s 400m hurdles, Nguyen Van Hue in the men’s decathlon, Do Thi Thao in the women’s 800m, Duong Van Thai in the men’s 800m and Le Trong Hinh in the men’s 200m.

Now, Vietnam ranks second on the medal table at the ongoing tournament with 57 gold medals, after host Singapore with 64 gold medals.

In a relevant note, Vietnamese star swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien today won a gold medal in the women’s 200m breaststroke at 2 minutes 31.16 seconds, lifting her haul to eight gold medals at the tournament.

The 28th SEA Games will last till June 16 in Singapore.
