Wednesday, January 04, 2017, 10:44 GMT+7

An American citizen was found dead in his hotel room in the ‘backpacker district’ of Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday night.

His body was discovered after hotel employees noticed a foul smell coming from his room on the third floor.

The man, later identified as U.S. national Barber Craig Loren, 55, had been staying alone at the hotel for a few days, according to hotel staff.

The hotel is in an alley on Pham Ngu Lao Street in District 1, a downtown neighborhood dubbed the ‘backpacker district,' home to a vibrant community of foreigners who visit the city.

Police reports say Loren had been dead for several days before he was discovered in a state of decomposition.

His body has been transferred to a morgue where a police autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of his death.
