-- The U.S. Coast Guard has transferred a High Endurance Cutter to the Vietnam Coast Guard to help it improve maritime domain awareness and increase its capacity to perform maritime law enforcement operations, the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi announced on Friday.

-- Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his spouse will pay an official visit to Japan and attend the 23rd International Conference on the Future of Asia in Tokyo from June 4 to 8, the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Friday.

-- Vietnam resolutely opposes Taiwan’s conducting a number of live-fire exercises in the waters area around Ba Binh island, which belongs to Vietnam’s Truong Sa archipelago, spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry Le Thi Thu Hang asserted on Friday, responding to reporters’ query on Vietnam’s reaction to the Taiwanese action.

-- Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on Friday backed a proposal to build a cross-nation expressway from the northern province of Lang Son to the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho from now to 2025.

-- Tran Thi Bich Tuyen, hailing from the northern province of Quang Ninh, have been arrested for swindling a woman of VND2.2 billion (US$96,916) by impersonating a U.S. soldier stationing in Afghanistan and offering to gift the victim $1.2 million.

-- The Vietnam Standards and Consumers Association (Vinastas) has been fined VND15 million ($661) for publishing inaccurate information about fish sauce quality in November last year.

-- Police in the central province of Quang Nam on Friday arrested a 23-year-old local man for allegedly raping his eight-year-old neighbor.

-- The Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Association has called on the government to extend the visa waiver for tourists from five Western European countries -- France, Italy, Germany, the UK, and Spain, which will end next month, for another five years.

-- South Korea has become Vietnam’s biggest foreign investor in the first five months of this year, with total direct investment of $4.41 billion, accounting for 36.4 percent of Vietnam’s total FDI in the period.
