Vietnam’s lawmaking National Assembly convened its third meeting of the current tenure (2016-2021) in Hanoi on Monday, with delegates discussing several important changes to existing policy.

During the three and a half week long gathering, a total of 491 delegates will review and make essential decisions regarding the socio-economic development of Vietnam.

Missing from this meeting are Ngo Van Minh, who recently passed away, and Vo Kim Cu, who was dismissed.

Members of the National Assembly will spend 13 and a half days evaluating 13 draft laws and five draft resolutions.

The draft regulations cover fields including railroads, external trade, irrigation, tourism, management of state assets, assistance for small-scale businesses, and adjustments to the penal code.

The resolutions will present modifications to the current law on public debt management, forest protection and development, aquaculture and denunciation, along with additions to the law on credit institutions.

Following the opening speech of NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, leaders of the central government reported the results of ongoing socio-economic development plans and the national budget in 2016, as well as the progress of these schemes during the first months of 2017.

Leaders of the Vietnamese Fatherland Front then presented the opinions and propositions of the people.

During the meeting, six and a half days will be reserved for evaluating reports made by the central government and for discussion of policies regarding food safety.

A total of three days will be dedicated to a question and answer session, which is longer than in previous meetings.

The gathering is expected to conclude on June 21.
