​Vietnam begins gold medal haul at SEA Games

Team Vietnam secured four gold medals during the first day of official competition on Sunday, and another two on Monday morning, at the ongoing 2017 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Malaysia.

Wushu artist Duong Thuy Vi began a fruitful day for Vietnam with a gold medal in the women’s Jianshu (sword) event, scoring 9.67 out of 10, making it her third SEA Games gold medal in a row.

Her teammate, Hoang Thi Phuong Giang, also took out the women’s Gun Shu (cudgel) gold medal, finishing just 0.01 point higher than host player Ying Tinbg Loh.

On Sunday afternoon, archer Chu Duc Anh claimed Vietnam’s third gold as he defeated Malaysia’s Khairul Anuar Mohamad 6-2 in the final of the men’s individual recurve event. The Vietnamese gymnasts wrapped up Sunday with their gold medal in the men's artistic team event.

In addition to the four gold, Vietnam finished Sunday with three bronzes won by My Trang and Quang Linh in the table tennis mixed doubles event, wushu artist Nguyen Thuc Anh, and My Trang and Nguyen Thi Nga in the women’s doubles table tennis.

As of Monday lunchtime, Vietnam had snatched two more golds in wushu and cycling.

Thuy Vi won her second gold at the 2017 Games on Monday in the women’s Qiang Shu (spear) event, outperforming host player Eyin Phoon by 0.01 of a point.

At the same time, cyclist Nguyen Thi That won gold in the women’s criterium, an event where riders complete several laps around a closed circuit.

That finished seven 5km laps in one hour and 12.12 minutes to win her second SEA Games gold medal, after winning her first in Singapore in 2015.

As of 11:00 am on Monday, Vietnam was ranked third on the SEA Games medal tally, with six golds, three silvers and four bronzes. Host Malaysia topped the leaderboard with 17 golds, 15 silvers and 11 bronzes.
