Vietnam coach slams referee after goalless draw with Indonesia at SEA Games

Vietnam coach slams referee after goalless draw with Indonesia at SEA Games

Wednesday, August 23, 2017, 10:05 GMT+7

Vietnam has failed to capitalize on any of their chances in the decisive Group B match against ten-man Indonesia at the 2017 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games men’s football tournament on Tuesday, with the team’s coach later blaming the referee.

After three straight victories, Vietnam would have secured a place in the semifinals with a win against Indonesia, regardless of the result of their last group match with Thailand.

The Golden Stars dominated the game but its strikers all wasted chances to convert. The Vietnamese also failed to take advantage after Indonesia had Hanif Sjahbandi sent off after he received his second yellow card in the 64th minute.

The goalless draw means Vietnam must get a result against Thailand this Thursday, while Indonesia take on underdogs Cambodia.

After four group games, Vietnam remain Group B leaders on ten points, followed by Thailand and Indonesia.

Thailand also have ten points but an inferior goal difference to Vietnam’s.

Now Vietnam will only advance via a win or a draw with at least two goals scored in their last group game.

If Vietnam lose to Thailand, or play another goalless draw, and Indonesia beat Cambodia, the tournament will be over for the Vietnamese.

At the post-match conference on Tuesday, Vietnam’s coach Nguyen Huu Thang blasted Omani referee Mubarak for ‘robbing’ his team of what he considered two clear penalty decisions.

“If the referee had officiated properly, we would have been awarded two penalty kicks,” he said.

The Vietnamese coach said he was unhappy with the draw after his men had dominated the entire game and created multiple chances.

Thang said Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia all now have an equal chance to advance to the semi-finals.

“We have to play better in the clash with Thailand,” he said.

“We will start that game full of confidence.”
