The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training announced Tuesday a decision to temporarily shut down a private school located in Tan Binh District.
The order follows the department’s fact-finding visit to Hien Vuong Middle and High School and the school owner’s written appeal for a temporary shutdown because of financial and human resource management difficulties.
The institution will cease all its operations until the end of the 2013-2014 academic year, while Hien Vuong students have all been seconded to another city private school.
This is the third private school that has been closed down so far this year.
In October, the department decided to close Khai Tri Middle and High School, located in District 5, for one year because it lacked basic teaching facilities.
Founded in 2002, Khai Tri was situated on the 4th and 5th floors of a house and did not have a schoolyard, lab, and other functional rooms for its students.
It also failed to meet the department’s requirements for faculty headcounts and qualifications.
The education department then worked with the school to send around 100 Khai Tri students to another private institution in the city.
Four months earlier, city education authorities released a directive to suspend the operations of Phuong Nam High School, based in Thu Duc District, for one year.
The impermanent closedown stems from the school’s failure to conform to regulations on internal organization, teaching activities, labor contracts with employees, and tax payment.
Set up as early as 1997, Phuong Nam did not have necessary facilities like labs, functional rooms, and libraries. It did not have any tenured teacher as required either.
The department ruled that the school transfer its students to another local private establishment.
Both Khai Tri and Phuong Nam will be licensed to operate again if they can rectify the situation later on.
