Two men are in police custody in Hanoi, one of whom operated a website hosted abroad that served sex workers and their potential guests. Nguyen Huy Viet, 26, was arrested on Monday on charges of “prostitution brokerage” and “spreading depraved cultural items,” while Nguyen Van Luc, 28, who owns Thai Hoa Hotel on Chua Boc Street, Hanoi, was detained the same day for “harboring prostitutes.” Both of them are Hanoi residents. According to the case file, Viet acted as an administrator for a foreign-originated website, where he posted information and images of 500-600 sex workers to introduce them to men who visited the website. Every sex worker involved in the prostitution website was provided with a password by Viet to use in communication with his or her potential guests. Viet offered prices from VND300,000 to VND400,000 (US$19.2) per session of sex, depending on age and appearance of each sex worker. For sex workers whose price was VND300,000 per session, Viet forced each of them to pay him a monthly reimbursement of VND3 million; and for sex workers whose prices are higher, the reimbursement will be VND4 million per month. Viet also offered to open accounts on the website for sex brokers and collected VND10 million per account. These brokers also posted information and images of their own prostitutes on the site to introduce them to men, in the same way as Viet. Meanwhile, Luc kept sex workers at his hotel where these prostitutes were ready to serve their guests on demand, according to instructions from Viet.
