-- Ho Chi Minh City police fined a woman VND500,000-1,000,000 (US$24-48) on Wednesday for falsely reporting that she had been drugged and had VND900 million (US$42,800) stolen while she was aboard a Jetstar Pacific airplane that landed at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in the city a day earlier.

-- A fire consumed 35 stalls at a market and 37 rooms of a dorm for workers nearby on Wednesday in the southern province of Long An.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung demanded last week that such a plan be submitted to him this week amid opposition by the people and government officials to Vietnam hosting this grand and costly event.  

-- Vietnamese football club Hanoi T&T defeated Maldivian rivals Maziya Sports & Recreation 2-1 on the latter’s home soil on Wednesday to secure a spot in the round of 16 at the 2014 AFC Cup.
