Careless train attendant sacked following near miss in central Vietnam

Careless train attendant sacked following near miss in central Vietnam

Wednesday, July 26, 2017, 14:02 GMT+7

A railway station attendant in the south-central Vietnamese province of Binh Thuan has been fired after two trains almost collided with each other because of his careless directions.

Ngo Viet Trung, an attendant at the Suoi Van Train Station in Binh Thuan, has been sacked for incompetence that could have resulted in serious consequences.

The manager of the station was also dismissed.

On the night of July 14, Trung gave the signal for the train SQN2 to enter the railway station and later allowed another train, SE1, to approach the facility on the same track.

The employee did not come to the railroad to monitor the entrance of the train as per protocol, but instead slept in his cabin.

As soon as he noticed the potential collision, Trung issued a warning to the second train, which would have been too late.

Thanks to the careful attention of the captain of SE1, the train stopped to avoid the accident when it was only 80 meters away from SQN2.

The incident affected the original schedule of both trains.

Earlier this month, the Saigon Railway Transport Joint Stock Company (SARATRANS), which manages railway routes between Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Thuan Province, said it had fired six attendants at several train stations for their lack of focus during night shifts.

Nguyen Dinh Dang, deputy director of the firm, said that the company was coordinating with some universities to establish a sensor system to alert employees whenever a train approaches a station.

According to protocol, an attendant must give the signal to an incoming train 15 to 30 minutes prior to its arrival.

During this time window, employees are likely to take short naps, thinking they will wake up as soon as the train arrives, one attendant at a station in Ho Chi Minh City said.
