Vietnam’s National Assembly named its vice chairwoman, Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, the chairwoman for the 2016-20 tenure on Thursday.

According to Huynh Van Ti, head of the voting committee, Ngan received a 95.5 percent approval rating as 472 out of 484 attending members cast their votes.

Following the appointment, the newly elected chairwoman made an oath of allegiance to the country, people, and constitution.

“I vow to fulfill all missions assigned by the Party, state and people,” Ngan said after being elected.

The chairwoman also assumed the position of chairperson of the National Election Council of Vietnam, after being approved by 467 out of 484 delegates.

Ngan was born on April 12, 1954 in the southern province of Ben Tre and holds a master’s in economics.

She was previously the director of the Ben Tre Department of Finance, Deputy Minister of Finance, and Minister of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, among others.

Ngan became the vice chair of the lawmaking National Assembly in 2011, member of the Politburo in 2013 and continues to be a part of the most powerful panel in the Party in 2016. 

She is the first woman to hold the position of the National Assembly chairperson.

On Wednesday, the National Assembly officially removed its previous chairman, Nguyen Sinh Hung, from his position as chairman of the legislative body as well as the National Election Council, in accordance with its resolution.

He has answered several questions regarding the early finalization of the election for the country’s leadership posts and other heads of state agencies.

As previous holders of several key positions did not sign up for re-election after the National Party Congress in late January, new personnel will be endorsed in an urgent manner to start carrying out the Party Resolution for the new tenure, according to Hung.     

The procedure will be completed about three months earlier than expected, as originally state leaders were to be endorsed during the first meeting of the new National Assembly in July, after its members are voted on in May.

Members of the National Assembly are also scheduled to dismiss State President Truong Tan Sang from his position during the meeting on Thursday, before the nominee for the new head of state, Minister of Public Security Tran Dai Quang, is introduced for election.

The voting procedure for the new state president is slated to be carried out on Saturday instead of Friday in order to avoid April Fools’ Day, some members of the National Assembly told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.
