Police in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum have arrested a 34-year-old man for killing his mother and throwing her body into a well last month. The killer, Nguyen Manh Duong, was arrested on Thursday at his house in Ngoc Hoi District and will be detained for four months for investigation of murder, police said. According to the case file, after drinking at a party on June 22, Duong returned home and asked his 58-year-old mother, Le Thi Cu, to borrow him some money so that he could repay his own debts. After his mother refused to give money to him and blamed him for causing debts, Duong slashed her on the head with a large knife. He then used the knife and a wooden bar to strike her on the legs and the head until she died. The impious son put the body of her mother in a sack and threw the sack into a well near the house. He later searched the house and found some money. He also found the house ownership certificate and then offered to sell the house for VND200 million (US$9,600). On July 2 local residents found Cu's body in the well and reported the case to police. They then removered the ill-fated woman from the well for burial.
Police launched an investigation and detained Duong for questioning. He later pleaded guilty of killing his mother.
