Student slashes arm to protest teacher

A high school girl was hospitalized Tuesday after she cut herself in strong opposition to her teacher, who refused to listen to her opinions.

Doctors said they succeeded in re-joining the tendon that was cut in the incident.

T.T.T.Y., an 11th-grader at Tran Ky Phong High School in the central province of Quang Ngai, suddenly slashed her left arm with a razor blade when her teacher, E., turned down her request for permission to speak her mind during a biology class, Ngo Quang Vinh, the school’s principal said.

Y. wanted to speak to the teacher about her refusal to run after-school courses for her class, which her classmates said was due to the two’s past ‘conflict’ when E. sent the student out for overreacting to her teaching methods, Vinh said, quoting Y’s form teacher and classmates.

The principal elaborated that the schoolgirl had strongly protested against E. for challenging her students, including Y., with drill questions they had not been taught, and asked the teacher to change her teaching method.

“Y. was discharged from class for that excessive reaction,’ Vinh said.

E. has been told to submit a report on all of this to the school, he said, adding it will punish the teacher if they find any sign of oppression of the student.

Local education board officials have also stepped in to study the case, promising a final conclusion on it by Monday.

In a separate heart-rending incident, a Ho Chi Minh City middle school student took her own life with herbicide last week after she lost a class fund, worth only VND 605,000(US$29), she was assigned to keep.

C.T., a 9th-grader in Cu Chi District, drank the poison because she was extremely worried over the loss.

Before the tragedy, she had told her friends that she did not dare to reveal her mistake to her parents, and that she would find ways to bring the money back to the class.

T. texted her classmates about her poisoning on October 8 and passed away at home five days later, after being hospitalized for two days.
