-- On Sunday, Vanuatu Prime Minister Joe Natuman started his five-day visit to Vietnam, at the invitation of his counterpart, Nguyen Tan Dung, to boost cooperation between the two countries.

Society

-- A bunker containing nearly 300 pieces of unexploded ordnance was unearthed Sunday at a depth of 2.5m underground while a mine and ordnance clearing team was conducting site clearance task near the Lao Bao border gate in the central province of Quang Tri.

-- The decomposing corpse of a girl, later identified as a 19-year-old gold shop attendant in the south-central province of Binh Thuan, was found Sunday in a forest in the province’s Ham Minh commune.

-- A Thai national was on Sunday caught by customs officers at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat airport hiding 1.73 kg of drugs, worth VND11 billion (US$517,745), in an incense box.

-- Seventeen people in three houses on Rach Bung Binh Street in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, had to evacuate on Sunday after one of the structures began leaning to its left.

- Nearly 140 trees on Nguyen Hue Street in downtown Ho Chi Minh City are to be cut down to facilitate a road upgrade project.

-- National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines had to readjust the schedules of its flights to and from Japan on Sunday and Monday due to foul weather caused by typhoon Phanfone.

-- State-run Vietnamese power giant Vietnam Electricity said they incurred around VND2 trillion ($94.14 million) worth of losses in the first quarter of this year, and thus demanded permission to hike power prices.

-- Vietnamese crocodile leather manufacturers are facing short supply of the animal’s skin, as Chinese traders are offering to buy live crocodiles at high prices.

-- The Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien railway project is expected to cost VND54 trillion ($2.54 billion), instead of the earlier estimate of VND47.3 trillion ($2.23 billion), according to the project management board.

Lifestyle

-- The first volume of Football Academy, a comic book inspired by four players from the Under-19 Vietnamese football team, was released today, October 6.

-- Three world-renowned jazz artists, Marco Parisi, Tass Petridis, and Choi Chi Woo, will stage a jazz fusion concert in Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday.

-- About 1,500 people participated in the final round of the 41st annual Open Hanoi Moi Run Tournament on Sunday, in celebration of the 60th anniversary of Hanoi’s Liberation Day (October 10).

-- Although Vietnam failed to meet its target of bringing home at least two gold medals at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, which wrapped up on Saturday, Lam Quang Thanh, head of Team Vietnam, said it is not right to call it a failure. The remark has ignited strong opposition from sports experts.

-- The Under-19 Vietnamese football team arrived in Myanmar on Sunday to prepare for their journey to the qualifiers of the 2014 Asian Cup from October 9 to 23.
