Police in Hanoi have detained 29-year-old Nguyen Thanh Tung, an editor at the Vietnam Television Corporation (VTC), and another man for buying six scooters even though they knew that the vehicles were stolen property. The editor and his accomplice, Nguyen Quyet, 26, were arrested on August 15 on charges of “harboring or consuming property acquired through the commission of crime by other persons,” under Article 250 of the Penal Code. Tung is a native of Nam Dinh Province but resides in Hanoi, while Quyet is from Ha Nam province and also lives in the capital. On August 13, a traffic police team stopped Nguyen Van Dat, 24, of Ha Nam province, who was driving an Air Blade, for a traffic violation. Since Dat had no papers related to the scooter, police handed the vehicle over to Hanoi’s anti-social crime police for investigation.  Dat told police that he had borrowed the bike from Quyet, who was later summoned by police for questioning. From Quyet’s testimony, police then found and detained Tung. According to the case file, Tung and Quyet bought many stolen motorbikes provided by Tran Van Tuyen, a 30-year-old man from Ha Nam, who is still at large. On August 13, Tuyen asked Tung to arrive to the Linh Dam urban area to meet a man named Duong to buy a stolen scooter. Tung phoned Quyet and the two went to Linh Dam, where Duong offered to sell an Air Blade without papers for VND16 million (US$760). Tung and Quyet agreed to buy the bike and then relayed the bike’s frame and engine numbers to Tuyen so that he could create papers and resell the bike. According to initial investigations, Tung and Quyet have purchased six stolen scooters, including three Air Blade, two SH and an Exciter. The police said they are expanding their investigation into the case and are looking for Tuyen.
