Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called for a meeting with the Ukrainian ambassador in Hanoi to clarify the recent incident in which Vietnamese people had their houses searched and property confiscated at a residential area in the European country.
Ukrainian Ambassador Oleksiy Shovkoplias was summoned to discuss with Vietnamese authorities the case in which Ukrainian police carried out a search on residences and seized property of Vietnamese residents at the Lang Sen (Lotus Village) residential area, located in the southern city of Odessa, the ministry said on Tuesday evening.
During the meeting, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Vu Hong Nam emphasized the severity of the incident and requested Ambassador Shovkoplias to report it to Ukrainian authorities.
Minister Nam also demanded that an investigation be conducted to pinpoint the motive and individuals responsible, and that all confiscated property be returned to the Vietnamese owners.
Authorities in Ukraine were requested to take measures to tighten security and ensure the safety of citizens living in the residential area.
Ambassador Shovkoplias promised to report the case to officials in his country and keep Vietnamese authorities informed of any updates in the case.
A physical confrontation occurred in Odessa between the Vietnamese citizens and local police officers, Interfax reported on Monday afternoon.
According to witnesses, the conflict arose from the fact that the police had carried out a search on residents, some of whom used violence during the process.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, upon being notified of the case, ordered the Embassy of Vietnam to stay updated and offer assistance to the victims, while urging local authorities to protect the legitimate interests of the Vietnamese community.
Ukraine had promised to mobilize units to ensure the safety of the citizens in the area.
