Vietnam premier attends two Myanmar summits to encourage regional cooperation

Monday, June 22, 2015, 16:29 GMT+7

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung left Hanoi on Monday for Myanmar for two regional conferences slated for June 22 and 23, including the 7th annual Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Vietnam (CLMV) Summit that aims to step up cooperation among the four Southeast Asian countries.  The other event is the 6th biennial Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy Summit (ACMECS), which looks to increase investment and strengthen trade connections in the region, according to the Vietnam News Agency. The Vietnamese government chief is participating in the events at the invitation of Myanmar President Thein Sein. During these summits, PM Dung is scheduled to discuss with leaders of regional countries measures to promote cooperation in water resource protection and human resource development. Through the conferences, Vietnam will also deepen its all-round partnerships with Myanmar and its affiliation to regional states.

The sixth CLMV Summit was held in Vientiane in March 2013, during which participants approved a Vientiane Joint Statement on fostering cooperation in transport, agriculture, energy, tourism, and human resource development to narrow the development gap among ASEAN countries. Meanwhile, the ACMECS Summit, which groups Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, promotes the advantages of member countries, targets common and bilateral economic cooperation, and narrows the development gap among them. The first ACMECS Summit was held in 2003 also in Myanmar, with the host and Thailand, Cambodia and Laos being initial members. Vietnam officially joined the summit in 2004. ACMECS now focuses on cooperation in such fields as trade, investment, industry, agriculture, energy, transport, tourism, healthcare, and human resource development.

During the fifth ACMECS Summit in Laos in 2013, participants adopted the Vientiane Statement and the ACMECS Action Program for 2013-15, aiming to foster links between ACMECS and the ASEAN Community and carrying out the ASEAN Connectivity Plan.
