Chi Pu, a rising star in Vietnamese showbiz, was named winner of the Rising Star Award at the 2016 Asia Artist Awards in South Korea on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old singer-turned-actress is known for her role in the 2015 Vietnamese film Yeu (Love) by director Viet Max, in which she co-starred with her real-life partner Gil Le to tell the story of a lesbian romance that developed from childhood friendship.

Chi Pu’s appearance in Yeu earned acclaim from critics who noted the actress’ performance far surpassed her previous acting attempts and was an unexpected surprise from an amateur actress with little formal cinema training.

The actress was announced winner of the Rising Star Award at the 2016 Asia Artist Awards, held at the Hall of Peace in Kyunghee University in Seoul on Wednesday.

This is the first rendition of the annual awards event which seeks to honor Asian artists for their outstanding contributions in the music and film industries.

Apart from acting, Chi Pu is also known for her directing and co-producing other movies.

In 2014, Chi Pu produced and held the lead role in the short film Co gai tren tang thuong (Rooftop Girl) which went on to be nominated for Best Short Film at the year’s Golden Kite Awards presented by the Vietnam Cinema Association.

Chi Pu also wrote the screenplay, directed, and starred in the Vietnamese series Tinh day toi thay minh trong ai (Wake Up), which has been released on YouTube since the beginning of this year.

The hit series landed Chi Pu’s name amongst the ranks of influential Vietnamese artists with a fan base admiring her talent and unrelenting efforts to prove her worth.

The 2016 Asia Artist Awards is Chi Pu’s first international recognition since her 2009 debut.
