Politics -- Vietnam and China have enjoyed a traditional and friendly relationship, and Vietnam will try its best, together with China, to further develop the cooperation for the benefit of both nations, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung told the visiting Vice Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Ho Hau Wah in Hanoi on May 3. Ho told Dung that the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership has brought practical benefits for both countries, adding that his visit aims to further strengthen the friendship between the two nations, as well as bilateral ties in economics, trade and investment.
Society -- Pham Minh Quyen, a driver assistant at Phuong Trang Company, a passenger transporter in Da Lat City, returned a wallet containing VND19 million (US$913) and a saving account book worth VND640 million ($30,800) to a passenger who had left behind the wallet on a bus of the company on May 3. The company said it would award Quyen for his good deed. -- Chinese concerned agencies have handed over to Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security 10 male newborns that had been sold to China in July 2011 in a human trafficking case uncovered by Chinese police. The boys are being taken care of at the Social Sponsoring Center in Quang Ninh Province while concerned agencies are trying to trace down their parents. -- The Tuoi Tre Editorial Board posthumously awarded the “Companions Around Me” prize, along with VND7 million (US$340) in cash, to Nguyen Van Nam, 19, a student who died after five other students on April 30. The prize was handed to Nam’s family yesterday in Trung Son Commune, Do Luong District, central Nghe An Province. -- Vietsopetrol, a Russian-Vietnamese joint venture for oil and gas exploration, yesterday hired a helicopter to take ashore five Vietnamese fishermen who had been poisoned with gas while working on their fishing boat 250 km off Vung Tau city, where the joint ventures is headquartered. After treatment, all the five victims have recovered. -- A woman and her two children died when their boat, which carried 85 tons cement, sank in the Tra River in Tien Giang Province after being hit from behind by a 1,000 ton barge. The woman’s husband, who is the owner of the boat, escaped from the accident. -- Health authorities in south-central Ninh Thuan Province are investigating cases of alcohol poisoning that have affected tens of people and killed nine of them over the past ten days. The provincial Health Department have sent samples of the dead victims and the alcohol they had drunk to the Pasteur Institute in Nha Trang City for testing. Business -- Vietnam has exported 2.151 tons of rice for US$942 million n the first four months of this year, up 23.5 percent in quantity compared to the same period last year, the Vietnam Food Association reported. However, the average export price of Vietnamese rice declined by $28 per ton year on year. In April alone, the export price declined by US$10-15 per ton from March.
-- Khanh Hoa Province People’s Committee has granted an investment certificate to Trong Diem Nha Trang Tourism Joint Stock Company to carry out the Champarama Resort & Spa project that will be developed in a 46-hectare area in Vinh Hoa Ward, Nha Trang City. The project has a total investment of VND1,200 billion (US$57.7 million).
-- Yesterday HCMC Market Management Sub-department inspected Van Gia Bao One-Member Co Ltd and found that the company violated regulations on advertising of goods. Inspectors have temporarily seized 400 Body Pro massage machines made in China for investigation, since their actual quality of such machines are not the same as advertised on TV.Lifestyle -- Two paintings by Pablo Ruiz y Picasso, the late Spanish painter, will be sold by Madame Marina Picasso, his granddaughter, in aid of children and adolescents in difficulty, including those in Vietnam. Sotheby’s Paris has been chosen by Marina Picasso to sell the paintings that are from her personal collection during the Impressionist & Modern Art Sale in Paris on June 6.
