A 31-year-old Australian man allegedly in mental illness robbed an ambulance from a Hanoi-based hospital and claimed the life of a local motorbike driver when fleeing away from the hospital on Friday.

The foreigner was identified as Reardon Jason Lloyd, who entered Vietnam on November 26, the An Ninh Thu Do newspaper quoted Hanoi police as saying.

At 23:00pm on Nov.29, Lloyd disturbed public security at the international terminal T1 of Noi Bai Airport, the newspaper said, while failing to elaborate the reasons for his improper acts.

Being injured at the airport, the Aussie was taken to Viet – Phap Hospital by an ambulance of Bac Thang Long Hospital, all located in Hanoi.

There, Lloyd didn’t cooperate with health staff of the hospital. At 2:00am of Friday, he jumped onto the driving cabin of an ambulance parked in the campus and sped up.

The man was driving on Minh Khai Street in Vinh Tuy Ward when he crashed into a motorbike, killing its driver, who was later identified as Nguyen Van Tung, 31.

Lloyd kept on driving for a section away and crashed into the gate of a company nearby. Seeing policemen coming, the Aussie man rushed up to the second floor of the company building, broke glass window with a flower pot and suddenly jumped down to the ground from the second floor.

The troublesome man with injured back and legs was immediately taken to hospital.

An Ninh Thu Do quoted local authorities as saying that Lloyd produced signs of mental troubles.

Police are investigating further.
