Da Nang to tighten Internet control

Da Nang to tighten Internet control

Friday, November 30, 2012, 14:44 GMT+7

Da Nang City’s Department of Information and Communications will use a type of software to control access to reactionary and porn sites at 30 public Internet centers on a pilot basis. The network of computers at each of these centers is required to be connected to the software, which will record the center’s opening and closing times and tightly control access to hostile and pornographic websites. All the information related to website visits will be transferred by the software to an administration system at the department for analysis. The results of the piloting of the software will be reported at the meeting of the city’s People’s Council for consideration and approval before the software can been applied citywide. Da Nang now has more than 800 public Internet centers each of which has 15-20 computers. Students account for the largest segment of their customers. Many of these centers have violated regulations on Internet use. Under prevailing regulations, public Internet centers are allowed to provide online game services from 6 am to 11 pm every day, but in fact, customers can play around the clock. Despite a ban from the Ministry of Information and Communications, some Internet centers still allow children under 14 years old to access the Internet and online games without supervision of their parents, while some others provide online game services although they are located near schools.
