An expatriate died from speeding in a motorbike accident last Friday in Hanoi, the local traffic police told Tuoitrenews on Tuesday when being asked about a recent reported crash in which an Australian teenager was presumably dead near the capital.
The Hanoi Traffic Police Department said that a young foreigner crashed his motorbike, with the number plate 29Y1-6487, into the median barrier on October 5 at 3:40 am local time when he was driving a woman at high speed on a downtown street. The man passed away on the spot whereas the woman behind him sustained severe injuries, and was immediately taken to an international hospital, according to the police.
Preliminary investigation results show that the expatriate himself caused the accident as he broke the speed limit, while witnesses said the man was drunk then.
The police did not specify the names and nationality of the two, however. They are still investigating the case at the moment.
Earlier, a young Aussie was reported to have died in a road accident on the same day the aforementioned expat lost his life.
Herald Sun, an Australian newspaper, quoted the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade as saying that 19-year-old Pat Cullen passed on last Friday near the Vietnamese capital city.
The Melbourne-based newspaper reported that the victim, said to come from Victoria State, had booked a ticket to return to his country this Friday.
One of his friends told the Herald Sun that Cullen was supposed to come back months ago, but kept lengthening his trip.
The Australian Embassy in Hanoi, when contacted by Tuoitrenews, said, "You should seek official information about the accident, cause, location, responsibility etc from the police. Arrangements for the deceased are a matter for his family."
