-- An over-10m-tall tree on Wednesday afternoon fell down and hit two cars traveling on Le Quy Don Street in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, during a heavy rain. No casualties were reported.

-- Nearly 3,000 road accidents have occurred in Ho Chi Minh City during the first nine months of the year, killing 607 people and injuring more than 2,300, according to the Department of Transport.

-- The Saigon Water Supply Corporation has signed an agreement to supply clean water to industrial parks and export processing zones in Ho Chi Minh City in order to limit groundwater extraction at those zones.

-- Around 13.8 percent of aquatic products in Ho Chi Minh City contain banned substances, the municipal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development announced on Wednesday after analyzing 548 samples in the first nine months of the year.

Business

-- Two-thirds of the current workforce will stop working at Intel Vietnam from the end of this month, Pham An Duong, the firm’s marketing director, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Wednesday. The job cut is part of Intel’s global restructuring plan.

-- General Electric Capital, the financial services unit of the American multinational conglomerate General Electric, on Wednesday announced it had signed an agreement with Ireland-based Mainstream Renewable Power Ltd. to construct and operate a number of large-scale wind power plants in Vietnam.

Education

-- Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Chairman Nguyen Thanh Phong on Wednesday requested the city’s Communist Youth Union to focus on ethical education for students, especially in the transition from elementary school to middle school, as well as encouraging entrepreneurship among young people.

-- Nha Nam Publisher has released a series of caricature books which feature economics, philosophy, and statistics. The series is meant to make it easier for readers to access tough subjects.
