The number of jobless people in Vietnam topped one million in the first quarter of 2016, of whom over 50 percent are youths aged 15 to 24, according to the latest statistics.

Unemployment statistics collected and processed by the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA) and the General Statistics Office were released in a report on Thursday at a conference on labor market updates in Hanoi.

According to the report presented by MOLISA Deputy Minister Doan Mau Diep, in the first quarter of 2016, the number of unemployed Vietnamese reached 1.07 million out of 54.4 million people aged 15 and older, the equivalent of a 2.25 percent unemployment rate.

The working age in Vietnam is 15 to 60 for men and 15 to 55 for women, according to Vietnamese law.

The figure shown in the report was an increase of nearly 21,000 from the last quarter of 2015.

The report also excluded 15.77 million people aged 15 and older who did not participate in economic sectors due to reasons such as disability or full-time student status.

Of those unemployed, more than 540,000 people, or 50.4 percent, were from 15 to 24 years of age, according to the same report.

The report also noted that over 45.5 percent of unemployed people live in cities, of which young adults make up 10.2 percent.

The unemployment rate of those holding a university degree or higher qualifications saw a slight rise of 0.63 percent, while there was a drop of 0.02 percent in such a rate for people with a vocational training degree.

The report also predicted a flow of workforce from agricultural and educational sectors to industry and communication in the second quarter of 2016.
