Vietnam lose 0-5 to N.Korea in Asiad women’s football

Wednesday, September 17, 2014, 11:48 GMT+7

The Vietnamese national women’s football team were crushed on Tuesday by their North Korean rivals at the 17th Asian Games (Asiad) held in Incheon, South Korea, when they were beaten 0-5. Two of the North Korean goals came on penalty shots.

North Korea took a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the game, even though Vietnam staged a ‘heavy defensive’ formation.

Midfielder Kim Yun Mi broke into the Vietnamese box and opened the scoring after a devilish shot from close range.

Five minutes later, the midfielder doubled the lead with another close-range goal.

Striker Kim Un Ha headed the ball to set up Kim Yun Mi in a favorable position in the box and she did not miss the chance to convert for her second goal of the match.

In the 21st minute, North Korea were awarded a penalty shot, and striker Kin Un Ju brought the score to 3-0.

Four minutes before the break, Ri Yeg Yong netted the fourth goal following a pass by Ra Un Sim.

In the second half, the North Korean side intentionally slowed down the tempo of the match and scored only one more goal, in the 88th minute, from a penalty kick by Jong Yuri.

Vietnam conceded a total of three penalty shots during the game, but the attempt by Kim Un Ju in the 27th minute was blocked by Vietnamese goalkeeper Kieu Trinh.

Despite the loss, the Vietnamese women still have a chance to advance to the quarterfinals if they beat Hong Kong on September 23. Group C has only three teams.

A total of 11 teams in three groups are taking part in the women’s football competition at the 17th Asian Games Incheon 2014.

The two best teams from each group and the two teams with the most points among the third-place teams will advance to the last-eight round.

The 2014 Asiad is being held from September 19 to October 4.
