Man fatally shot in head while waiting at red light near Nha Trang

A Vietnamese man was shot to death by an unidentified man while he stopped at a traffic light in the south-central province of Khanh Hoa on Saturday.

At around 6:20 am, the victim, 31-year-old Nguyen Van Thien, was driving his motorbike on the National Highway No.1 in Dien Khanh Town in the namesake district when he saw the red light.

While he was waiting for the green light, Thien was approached from behind by young man on another motorbike. The unidentified shooter took out a black handgun and shot Thien directly in his head.

Thien fell to the ground and died on the scene. The gunman immediately fled on his motorbike, while passers-by were still too shocked to know what had happened.

Dien Khanh is some 20km west of the coastal city of Nha Trang.

Khanh Hoa police said autopsy result confirms that Thien died from the headshot.

Officers have also found the gun, measuring 20cm long, the shooter left at the scene.

The incident blocked traffic for more than two hours as people gathered in crowds to watch police investigate the scene.

A family member of the victim said Thien was a painting worker. He had only left home for a while when the tragedy happened.                                                                                                                   

Police are investigating and hunting for the gunman.
