Hanoi-based Vsico Maritime JSC has broken ground on two new wharves with total investment of over US$67.2 million at the deep-water Chan May port cluster in central Vietnam’s Thua Thien-Hue Province.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new wharves was conducted by the provincial administration on Saturday at the port cluster, located in the Chan May-Lang Co Economic Zone in the province’s Phu Loc District.

The event took place in the presence of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, who pressed the button to launch the construction of the new facilities, and also gave gifts to representatives of the contractors of the project.

These wharves, No. 4 and No. 5, will cover 20.4 hectares with a total length of 540 meters, and will be capable of accommodating cargo ships of up to 70,000 metric tons and container ships of up to 4,000 TEUs, according to managing director of Vsico Vu Duc Hue.

They will be built as parts of the Chan May port cluster, which is located between Thua Thien-Hue and Da Nang City, the two largest localities in the central region.

The cluster serves as the closest and most convenient gateway to the East Vietnam Sea for the East-West economic corridor, which connects central Vietnam with Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, other Asian countries and the world.

The project is scheduled to be complete in the second quarter of 2025 and put in use in early 2026, with a total cost over VND1,678 billion ($67.24 billion).

Upon operation, the new wharves can annually clear about five million metric tons of exports.

The project will also include a closed conveyor system with a length of 1.2km and specialized equipment with a capacity of exporting 2,000 metric tons of cargo per hour and importing 1,000 metric tons of cargo per hour at the bulk cargo terminal.

In addition, the container terminal area of the wharves will be equipped with a modern crane system with a cargo handling capacity of up to 60 containers per hour.

This project will contribute to promoting the position of Chan May - Lang Co Economic Zone in particular and Thua Thien - Hue Province in general, contributing to boosting the province’s socio-economic development, Hue said.
