Three Vietnamese teams have won one silver and two bronze medals at the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) Asia Pacific Championship to qualify themselves for the ICPC World Championship, the contest’s organizing board announced.

The Sudo team representing the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) under the Vietnam National University-Hanoi secured a silver medal during the final round of the 2024 ICPC Asia Pacific Championship.

The championship, hosted by UET, commenced on Friday and brought together 65 teams from 40 universities across the region.

Two other Vietnamese teams, HCMUS-ExploringWorld from the University of Science under the Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City and HUST Kite from the Hanoi University of Science and Technology, won a bronze medal each.

Given their outstanding performances, the three medal-winning teams, out of the 12 Vietnamese teams participating in the contest, have secured spots among the top 16 teams in the Asia-Pacific region to qualify for the 2024 ICPC World Championship, scheduled to commence in Kazakhstan in September this year.

The selection of these 16 teams was determined by their success in solving the 13 algorithm problems stipulated by the regional contest.

The ICPC championship title was claimed by the NewTrend team from South Korea's Seoul National University.

Three gold medals were awarded to teams from the National University of Singapore, the University of Tokyo, and the University of Kyoto, all representing Japan.

Along with UET, Japan’s Tokyo Institute of Technology, South Korea’s Soongsil University, and University of Indonesia won a silver each.

Five teams, including the two previously mentioned Vietnamese teams, secured bronze medals.

The remaining three teams come from South Korea's Pohang University of Science and Technology, Singapore's Nanyang Technological University, and National Taiwan University.

This is the first time that a Vietnamese university has hosted such a regional competition since the country took part in ICPC for the first time in 2005.

In 2022, Vietnamese students won a bronze medal at the ICPC World Championship in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

As an annual event for university students around the world, the ICPC is a multi-tiered competitive programming competition at which teams of three work to solve the most real-world problems, fostering collaboration, creativity, innovation, and the ability to perform under pressure, according to the ICPC’s website.

The first ICPC World Championship was held in Atlanta in 1977.
