Six people were killed while many houses burned after a crash caused a large tanker fire in the southern province of Binh Phuoc on early Thursday.

The petrol truck was traveling on National Highway 13 near the Minh Hung - Korea Industrial Park at around 4:30am when it rear-ended a three-wheeled cargo motorcycle, according to eyewitnesses.

The tanker then crossed the median strip to the other side of the road where it continued down the sidewalk and eventually crashed into a medium voltage power pole.

The truck then overturned, spilling petrol onto the street which erupted in flames that quickly engulfed a series of houses along the highway.

At least six people died on the spot, while dozen others were injured and the tanker was completely destroyed.

Initial reports show that 19 houses were affected, with many of them severely burned and one completely engulfed by the raging flames.

Most of the victims were sleeping at the time of the accident so few were able to escape when their houses caught fire, according to eyewitnesses.

Many fire trucks and hundreds of firefighters were dispatched to the scene.  The fire was finally extinguished after more than an hour of battling the flames.

Binh Phuoc police are continuing their investigation into the case.
