An 18-year-old student in Khanh Hoa Province, south-central Vietnam has returned VND490 million (US$19,746) to its owner after it was mistakenly transferred to his bank account.

Nguyen Gia Hung, a 12th grader at Ngo Gia Tu High School in Cam Ranh City, Khanh Hoa Province, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the money was transferred to his account on Monday but he did not realize until Tuesday.

“At the time, I was anxious as I had never received such a large amount. I then told my parents what happened.”

Due to bank transfer limits on his account, he could not immediately return the money, nor was he sure who it should have been returned to.

On Wednesday, Hung asked for his teacher’s permission to take two classes off so that he could visit the bank with his father and identify the owner.

At the bank, the teller helped him return the money to Nguyen Thi Huong, a resident in Hai Duong Province in northern Vietnam who had accidently entered the wrong account number during the transfer.

According to Nguyen Thi Yen, principal of Ngo Gia Tu High School, Hung is a sociable and determined student.

The school will grant a certificate of merit to Hung and commend him for his honesty, Yen said.
