A taxi was running on a Phap Van - Cau Gie Expressway section in Hanoi when it suddenly moved backward and narrowly avoided a collision with another car behind it.

The case happened early this month.

The taxi driver drove the vehicle in reverse while using turn signals, according to footage from a dashboard camera of the car traveling behind the cab.

The taxi seemed about to turn right into a branch of the expressway.

The driver of the behind car said his vehicle was almost hit by the taxi and a coach behind it.

While reversing, the taxi also collided with the chevron markings on the surface of the expressway.

Videos of the case, after being shared on social media, have captured locals’ attention.

Many netizens have criticized the taxi driver for his carelessness.

Moving backward on expressways is a dangerous act but not scarce.

In 2016, a car carrying 10 passengers collided with a container while it was moving backward on an expressway section in Thai Nguyen Province, northern Vietnam, leaving five passengers dead and five others injured.

Pursuant to Article 5 of Government Decree 100/2019/ND-CP, those driving cars in reverse on expressways, except for those on urgent duty, are subject to a fine of VND16-18 million (US$631-710) each and have their driver's licenses revoked for five to seven months.

The penalties will be heavier if their acts lead to accidents.

The decree also regulates that car drivers shall be fined VND300,000-400,000 ($12-16) each and have their driver's licenses revoked for two to four months if they cause a traffic accident.
