Vietnam’s northern region and many provinces and cities in the central region might be struck by more intense heat in May, while the Central Highlands and southern regions will continue to see extreme heat this month, according to the national weather center.

Nguyen Duc Hoa, deputy head of the center, said that a tropical depression is continuing in the west, leading to extreme heat in many parts of Vietnam.

This year’s heat is forecast to be more extreme than the average over the past several years, Hoa said.

Accordingly, the average temperature in Vietnam this year is 1.5 - 2.5 degrees Celsius higher than in previous years.

However, the end of May will see rain pour down to cool the Central Highlands and southern regions, he underlined.

He also issued warnings of strong winds, hail, and thunderstorms during that period.

Dryness is forecast to weaken in the two regions in the last 10 days of May.

A report released by the center on Thursday showed that the highest temperature in many localities from Quang Binh Province to Phu Yen Province might reach 39 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, other provinces from Khanh Hoa to Binh Thuan will record the highest mercury at 35 degrees Celsius.

Before the heat weakens on Saturday, the Central Highlands will record highs of 37 degrees Celsius, according to the national weather center.
