Air coordinator sacked for Vietnam plane's mistaken landing

Air coordinator sacked for Vietnam plane's mistaken landing

Monday, July 21, 2014, 11:31 GMT+7

Low-cost carrier VietJet Air, the country’s sole private operating carrier, has dismissed an air coordinator and imposed disciplinary actions on several other employees involved in a wrong-airport landing scandal last month, an airline spokesman said Sunday.

The air coordinator lost his job over his failure to inform the captain of a VietJet Air plane of a schedule change, which resulted in the pilot landing the plane 130 kilometers away from its intended destination, according to the airline.

Other relevant employees received disciplinary warnings and had their salaries and bonuses cut, or were temporarily suspended from duty and had to be trained again.

VietJet Air flight VJ8575, with around 200 passengers, departed from Hanoi and landed at Cam Ranh International Airport in the coastal province of Khanh Hoa on June 19, while it was supposed to fly the passengers to Da Lat City in the Central Highlands.

The flight operator first told the media that the landing was due to foul weather in Da Lat, but eventually admitted that its captain landed the Airbus A320 because of human error.

The flight’s destination had been switched from Cam Ranh to Da Lat at the last minute, but the Czech captain had not been informed of the change.

VietJet Air has determined that the error was the fault of the coordinator at Hanoi-based Noi Bai International Airport, who was fired on Sunday.

All of the employees involved also had to compensate for the damages they caused, the carrier said.
