Vietnam reviews 25-year FDI attraction

Vietnam reviews 25-year FDI attraction

Wednesday, March 27, 2013, 16:26 GMT+7

A national conference on reviewing 25-year attraction of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Vietnam is taking place in Hanoi.

The conference aims to evaluate the outcomes as well as shortcomings of FDI attraction.

Participants will discuss orientations to lure foreign investment into high value-added, high-tech, environmentally-friendly projects.

Ways to enhance connectivity among enterprises will also be part of the agenda.

In a recent interview with VGP’s reporter, Chairman of the Eurocham Vietnam Preben Hjortlund underscored that “foreign investment has helped increase Viet Nam GDP growth rate.”

This has not only been in terms of capital influx, but also – and especially – through the transfer of technology and skills. The combination of these factors has driven the economy to a much stronger position, which in turn has had a positive impact on socio-economic developments.

He said the structure of foreign investment has changed over the past decades, shifting from a point where foreign investment only was possible through joint ventures, to today, where only certain sectors have such restrictions. This shift is a positive development, as a reduction in restrictions leads to greater interest from foreign investors to come to Vietnam.
