-- Deputy Minister of Defense General Do Ba Ty was voted one of the two deputy chairs of Vietnam’s lawmaking National Assembly on Monday.

-- Vietnam’s Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh has sent a congratulatory message to his Myanmarese counterpart Aung San Suu Kyi over her appointment on Monday, expressing his belief that she will contribute to leading the country to prosperity.

-- Eighteen houses were destroyed, whereas 3,066 others had their rooftops damaged as a hailstorm wreaked havoc on five districts in Tuyen Quang, Yen Bai and Ha Giang, all northern provinces, on Sunday, according to the government’s latest damage report released on Monday.

-- As many as 118 out of 599 reservoirs in Dak Lak Province have completely dried up in what is considered the worst drought to hit Vietnam’s Central Highlands.

-- Three multimillion-dollar ethanol manufacturing plants, aimed at supplying materials to make biofuels, developed by oil and gas giant PetroVietnam have proven an investment failure, as there is little demand for the environment-friendly gasoline in Vietnam.
