Politics -- Senior military officers of Vietnam and the Czech Republic discussed bilateral cooperation in defense industry, scientific research, military technology, military equipment maintenance, and personnel training at their talks in Hanoi on Friday. The meetings was held between Deputy Minister of Defense Senior Lieutenant General Do Ba Ty, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, and visiting General Petr Pavel, Chief of the General Staff of Armed Forces of the Czech Republic.Society -- Hanoi police on Thursday detained a 23-year-old taxi driver, Nguyen Xuan Viet, who snatched an iPhone 5 from a Finnish woman, Mrs. Mari Susanna, after failing to overcharge her and her husband in Tay Ho District.

-- The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has directed the Department of Education and Training to coordinate with the Department of Health to launch a campaign to provide students with basic knowledge of the fatal Ebola virus disease, which is spreading in four West African countries and had killed at least 1,069 people there. -- The People’s Committee of the southern province of Binh Duong will launch a credit package worth VND1 billion (US$47,000) to support businesses that suffered damage during the riots that occurred in some industrial parks in the province in mid-May. These riots were caused by extremists that took advantage of peaceful marches of local workers against China’s illegal deployment of the oil rig Haiyang Shiyou 981 in Vietnam’s waters. China removed the rig from Vietnamese water on July 16. --  Three fishermen were rescued on Friday morning after their fishing boat was hit by thunderstorms and strong waves and sank 110 nautical miles southeast off the southern city of Vung Tau, local authorities reported. -- Police in southern Dong Nai province are investigating the death of lieutenant sergeant Bui Son Tung, 25, a member of a mobile police unit in the province’s Bien Hoa City. Tung was found dead at the barracks of his unit on Friday morning, with many stab wounds on his body. -- A heavy rain that lasted for an hour on Friday afternoon seriously submerged many areas in Ho Chi Minh City, with some streets in District 6 inundated in 1-meter deep water. Numerous vehicles, including motorcycles, cars and trucks, broke down in many areas in the city.Business --  The Vietnam Society of Travel Agents (Vista) has set up the Club of Japanese Travel Agencies in an aim to help increase the number of Vietnamese travelers to Japan. The club will also help introduce attractive tourist destinations in Japan to Vietnamese people.   Sports --  Vietnamese chess grandmaster Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son made an exceptional finish to the 41st World Chess Olympiad in Norway on Thursday as he claimed the gold medal on Board 2 with an 11-game unbeaten run. Meanwhile, the Vietnamese men's team, with 14 points following five wins, four draws and two losses, ranked 27th of the 152 participating teams at the Olympiad.
