-- Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung welcomed former Japanese PM Yukio Hatoyama on Wednesday during his visit to Vietnam to attend the 2014 Asian-Oceanian Computing Industry Organization ICT Summit, which is taking place in Hanoi and Da Nang City with a focus on “ICT – The New Paradigm for Socio-Economic Development and Agricultural Restructuring.”

Society:

-- There were around 204,377 drug users in Vietnam as of the end of September, according to the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids, and Social Affairs.

-- In a meeting on bribery with local media on Wednesday, Deputy Head of the Central Interior Department Nguyen Doan Khanh confirmed the act of giving bribes in the form of sex does exist in Vietnam

-- The 553km stretch of National Highway No. 14 through the Central Highlands is expected to be finished by October 2015, roadwork management officials said Wednesday. National Highway No. 14 is part of the Ho Chi Minh Highway running from the north to the south.

-- According to the Ministry of Construction, Vietnam currently has nearly 1,700 old apartments, including 1,100 in Hanoi and 530 in Ho Chi Minh City. Hanoi has re-constructed 14 of them, while the number in the southern city is 38.

-- Vietnam-based Doosan Vina Company has just exported a 4,500-tonne piece of desalination equipment to Saudi Arabia.

-- Many expenses have not been included in the projected US$18.7 billion required to build the new Long Thanh International Airport in the southern province of Dong Nai, the Economic Committee of the National Assembly said Wednesday.

Education:

-- More than 700 students are attending the 23rd Vietnam Informatics Olympiad that kicked off Wednesday in Ho Chi Minh City.

Lifestyle:

-- Eighteen Vietnamese movies will compete at the Hanoi International Film Festival, to be held from November 23 to 27 in the capital city. The event is expected to feature 327 films from countries and territories with highly developed movie industries, including China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Germany, France, the U.K., and the U.S.

-- American pop star Kelly Clarkson, who won the first season of the renowned singing competition “American Idol” in 2002, on October 29 confirmed on her Facebook page that she will perform at the finale of this year’s Miss Vietnam pageant. The final night of the biennial beauty contest is scheduled to take place on December 6 at Vinpearl Phu Quoc Resort on the southern island of Phu Quoc.
