The Vietnamese national football squad will gather today in Hanoi to prepare for the upcoming 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup, while public anger towards three players they said should be disqualified from the team for inappropriate behavior and morality still is not over. The team, led by newly-appointed local coach Phan Thanh Hung, will have seven training sessions in the capital city before leaving for Malaysia on September 10 for a friendly match a day later. The team will continue to fly to Jakarta to prepare for another friendly game with Indonesia on September 15. Coach Hung said veteran midfielder Nguyen Minh Phuong will join the 24-player team in their 12-day fitness and stamina practice in Nha Trang starting October 1. The national team has recently been hit by a scandal with three of its players, Van Quyet, Ngoc Duy, and Quoc Long -- all coming from Hanoi T&T club, criticized for their unacceptable behaviors during their match against Saigon Xuan Thanh (SGXT) at the National Cup final on August 29. Ngoc Duy was sent off the pitch at the 90th minute with his second yellow card after viciously fouling Nguyen Rogerio when SGXT was leading the match 3 - 1. Van Quyet and Duy then attempted to assault Rogerio, while Quoc Long turned to the reporters around the pitch and started badmouthing them for criticizing his fellow’s bad behaviors. Goalie Ngoc Tu also joined in, and even pointed a dirty finger towards the reporters. All of the said behaviors were seen by thousands of spectators at Thong Nhat stadium, and TV viewers. Local football fans and coaches thus demanded that the three be expelled from the national team. On the other hand, some insiders said they doubt this would take place, as coach Hung is also the head coach of Hanoi T&T club. Asked about this, the coach said, “The three players deserve criticism for their actions. The penalties, if any, will be ruled by the Vietnam Football Federation and its disciplinary department.” Hung added however that the players have shown remorse. “Should they commit the same mistake again, I will never recruit them for the national team,” he asserted.
