Surveillance cameras prove effective in keeping order for Vietnam’s Sa Pa

Congestion and street crimes in Sa Pa, a famous tourist town in the northern mountainous Vietnamese province of Lao Cai, have been greatly alleviated thanks to the installment of a surveillance camera system.
Visitors to the tourist destination have been able to enjoy their excursion along local streets without being trapped in long lines of traffic or feared of potential theft, which often happened during peak seasons, thanks to the security cameras planted across the locality over a year ago.
The devices are managed and monitored at a command center which provides prompt response to any situation that could compromise traffic safety and order in the town.
“The surveillance system has also helped competent authorities solve several theft cases and tourist soliciting,” said Junior Lieutenant Ha Ngoc Luan, an operator at the command center.
“Lost wallets and other belongings have also been returned to their owners thanks to the footage of the cameras,” the officer continued.
Ha Anh Tuan, a 34-year-old traveler from Hanoi, stated that his experienced in Sa Pa in the past year has been improved due to the reduction of street crimes, traffic jams, and soliciting from local vendors.
John, a 26-year-old British tourist, also considered that the local tourism has become more professional than what he had observed during his previous trip in 2013.
Any situation that affects the comfort of visitors will be quickly resolved by competent authorities, the foreigner added.
Several 360-degree cameras with large zoom range have also been added to the town’s line-ups, along with loud speakers installed at certain corners to address any violation on the spot.
According to Colonel Tran Van Truong, chief of the local police department, the effectiveness of the surveillance system has been reported to the Lao Cao administration.
More cameras have been proposed to be placed at at least five more locations which are often packed with visitors, Col. Truong stated.
