The members of the Vietnamese team secured five medals, including two golds, at the 43rd International Physics Olympiad held by Estonia between July 15 and 24, the Ministry of Education and Training said Monday.

Ngo Phi Long, an 11th-grader at Son La Specialized High School in the northern province of Son La, bagged one of the two golds, with the other going to Dinh Ngoc Hai, a 12th-grader at Bien Hoa Specialized High School in the northern province of Ha Nam.

The only silver was collected by Le Huy Quang, a 12th-grader at Lam Son Specialized High School in the northern province of Thanh Hoa, while Dinh Viet Thang and Bui Xuan Hien, enrolled in grade 12 at Le Hong Phong Specialized High School in the northern province of Nam Dinh, earned the other two bronzes.

This can be seen as a step forward as Vietnamese students grabbed only one gold, together with two silvers and two bronzes, at the 42nd International Physics Olympiad last year in Thailand.

The 2012 competition was attended by nearly 300 candidates from 88 countries and territories. The five Vietnamese participants were selected from the team that won eight medals, including one gold, five silvers, and two bronzes, at the 13th Asian Physics Olympiad hosted by India in May.

Vietnam also bagged ten medals, including one gold and four silvers, at this year’s international math and biology Olympiads.
