Politics:

-- Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and his spouse will pay an official visit to India on October 27-29 at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi following a four-day state visit made by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee at the invitation of Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang last month, according to the Foreign Ministry. India reaffirmed to consider Vietnam as a pillar in its “Look East” policy while Vietnam will continue to maintain its support for India ’s policy and its all-round connectivity with Southeast Asian region.

-- The State of Vietnam has decided to temporarily suspend the execution of the imprisonment sentence on Nguyen Van Hai, and allowed him to go to the United States for humanitarian reasons, said Pham Thu Hang, deputy spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the case of blogger Nguyen Van Hai, better known as Dieu Cay, at a regular press conference on Thursday afternoon.

Society:

-- Director of the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam has suspended the two Filipino pilots of VietJet Air airlines (VJA) for landing on the wrong position on the runway in Cam Ranh Airport in the central province of Khanh Hoa last Thursday. Though the VJ8856 landed safely, the crew made the landing at runway 20 instead of the runway as instructed by air traffic control.

Business:

-- Insurance companies said they have paid about VND116 billion ($5.45 million) to businesses, mostly foreign firms, which were affected in incidents sparked by workers’ riots held on May 13-14 to protest against China’s illegal placement of Haiyang Shiyou 981 oilrig in Vietnam’s waters during the period. Of the compensation, over VND88 billion ($4.13 million) was paid to 51 enterprises, while over VND 27 billion ($1.26 million) was advanced to 23 others, many of which are based in industrial parks in the southern provinces of Binh Duong and Dong Nai.

-- A ceremony has been launched to mark the construction of Thang Long thermal power plant, the first privately-invested of its kind, in Hoanh Bo District in the northern province Quang Ninh in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai.  The 600 MW plant, covering more than 124ha, has a total investment of over VND22 trillion ($1.05 billion) financed by the Thang Long-Gelexemco Thermal Power Co. Ltd.

-- The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Can Tho branch and the Finnish Embassy have co-organized a ceremony to launch a project, which will be implemented in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta localities with assistance from the embassy’s fund, to support Vietnam’s exports of agricultural and aquaculture products to Finland and Northern European countries.

-- The Cham people’s traditional Kate festival has attracted thousands of local residents and tourists to their homeland in the southern central province of Binh Thuan. A procession of Po Sah Inu Goddess costumes was held on Wednesday at the Po Sah Inu Tower in Phan Thiet City, followed by traditional rituals and dances with Gi Nang drums and Saranai trumpets. Additionally, various cultural activities, such as art shows, traditional costume displays, culinary exhibitions and traditional writing competitions were organized in the province.
