Large quantities of people, along with their vehicles, have been returning to Ho Chi Minh City after they visited their hometowns for Tet celebration, causing serious congestions at gateways into the city during the past few days.

>> Over 1 million in HCMC to travel home for Tet More traffic jams are forecast to continue in the coming days, when more and more returnees come back from the southern Mekong Delta area or from provinces and cities in the central and northern regions. As a result, a prolonged congestion occurred yesterday, February 5, on a National 1A section that runs through Vinh Long and Tien Giang provinces in the Mekong Delta. From early morning, a large quantity of people crossed the My Thuan Bridge on their vehicles and they soon got stuck at the An Huu Bridge that is small and under repair in Cai Be District, Tien Giang Province.  A lot of traffic police officers and inspectors were mobilized to the scene to handle the jam. The serious congestion took many people three hours and a half, from 11:30 am to 3 pm, to travel a distance of just 7 km to cross the An Huu Bridge. By 6 pm on February 5, another congestion stretched for 3 km from the My Thuan Bridge to Tan Thoi Dong Bridge in Long Ho District, Vinh Long Province.   Meanwhile, a traffic jam also occurred on a section of about 1 km on National Highway 80, from the flyover to Cai Da Bridge, in Can Tho City. People and vehicles in large numbers also returned to the city from southeastern and central provinces, causing traffic jams at some entrances into the city the same day. One of the jams occurred on Hanoi Highway, in front of Suoi Tien tourist complex, at 4:30 pm. Another was seen on Dinh Bo Linh Street, in front of the Eastern Coach Station, where a lot of coaches flocked to the area.     At the same time near the Cat Lai ferry station, cars and motorbikes followed one another on a distance of over 2 km in Dong Nai province to get tickets to cross the Dong Nai River to enter HCMC. About 10 ferries had to operate continuously to carry passengers to avoid congestion, the station’s management said.
