Video shows Chinese tourists harassing Vietnamese fruit peddler in Da Nang

A group of Chinese tourists are seen harassing a Vietnamese banana peddler in the central city of Da Nang in a video shared on Facebook on Monday.

Nguyen Duy Khoai, a Da Nang-based musician, uploaded the 40-second video, apparently filmed by himself, on his Facebook accompanied by a lengthy story explaining what happened.

The musician said the incident occurred on Phan Chau Trinh Street at 8:20 am, when Chinese visitors pulled the female fruit seller over, asking to buy her bananas.

“The Chinese then picked up banana after banana, eating and throwing the fruit skins into her basket in an uncultured way and without asking her,” Khoai wrote.

According to the musician, the peddler then requested the foreigners pay VND40,000 (US$1.79), only to have one of them display a Chinese Yuan note.

The Vietnamese woman shook her head in disagreement, explaining that Chinese currency cannot be used directly in daily trade in Vietnam. The Chinese man then “talked non-stop in his language” before giving the seller a VND50,000 ($2.23) bill.

“However, when the woman returned VND10,000 [$0.45] in change, the Chinese became angry and seized her,” Khoai wrote.

Finally, the foreign tourists left, but only after one of them snatched the peddler’s hat and another Chinese woman rushed to ‘steal’ another banana from the basket, according to the Facebook status that had received more than 4,000 shares as of Tuesday morning.

The video adds fuel to widespread public outrage over the rising number of Chinese arrivals to Da Nang, as well as the beach city of Nha Trang in the south-central province of Khanh Hoa.

In both of these popular tourist destinations, many Chinese nationals also work illegally as tour guides, stealing jobs from the local, qualified tourism personnel.

Those illegal tour guides are also said to provide distorted accounts of Vietnamese history to visitors.
