Five people in the northern Vietnamese province of Hai Duong were killed after a lime kiln collapsed on Sunday afternoon.

The fatal accident occurred at around 2:00 pm at the facility owned by the family of Nguyen Van Van in Phu Thu Town, Kinh Mon District.

The five workers were working at the lime kiln at the time of the accident when the structure collapsed, burying the victims under the rubble.

Police officers and rescue teams arrived shortly after to retrieve the bodies from the debris, with all five confirmed dead.

Of the victims, Nguyen Van Luan, 25, was Van’s son, and Tran Van Dung, 28, was the owner’s adopted child.

The other three, including Nguyen Van Vi, 59, Truong Van Buoi, 49, and Truong Van Coi, 61, were local laborers.

Nguyen Thi Lieu, chairwoman of the People’s Committee in Kinh Mon District, said in the evening that the bodies of the deceased were undergoing post-mortem examinations while authorities were also investigating the scene to figure out the cause of the accident.

Local leaders have also offered their support to the families of the late workers.

According to Lieu, owners of the lime kiln had temporarily ceased operations to carry out renovations prior to the collapse.
