The vacancy of Nguyen Duc Kien, a football and banking tycoon who was last week arrested over economic violations, left at the Hanoi football club (Hanoi FC) and Hanoi Juniors FC has now temporarily been filled, the Vietnam Football Federation said Tuesday. ACB Hanoi Sports JSC, which owns the said football clubs, said in a document sent to VFF that its managing director, Le Khac Chinh, will replace Kien as the valid representative to work with VFF, the local football governing body said in a statement. “ACB Hanoi Co began clearing its wage debts to footballers of the two clubs on Tuesday,” said Chinh, who is also the managing director of Hanoi Juniors FC, adding the footballers will gather in October to prepare for the new season. Besides Hanoi FC and Hanoi Juniors FC, ACB Hanoi also has six other junior clubs, whose operations “remain normal,” Chinh told reporters. Kien, considered one of the most powerful figures in Vietnamese soccer to date, was suspended by VFF on August 24 from all football-related activities after his arrest earlier last week. Kien was detained at home on August 20 following allegations of illegal business activities at three of his personal companies. The suspension will be valid until police announce their final conclusion on Kien’s alleged wrongdoings, VFF chairman Nguyen Trong Hy said in a statement. Hy said VFF officials are reviewing the rule to figure out how to solve a case when a football club is no longer able to play at the country’s top-tier V-League, or the First Division. “Meanwhile, I can now say nothing about the two club’s future when Kien’s case has yet to be fully handled,” he said.
