Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday protested China’s construction and expansion work in the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago in the East Vietnam Sea, considering it illegal and invalid. Hanoi reiterates that it has sufficient legal and historical evidence to prove its sovereignty over the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos, the ministry’s spokesman Le Hai Binh said at a press conference in Hanoi yesterday. Binh’s statement was made in reply to reporters’ questions on Vietnam’s response to the April 9 speech by Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying about the expansion of underground reefs in Truong Sa. Vietnam resolutely opposes the above actions and requests that the parties concerned strictly implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Vietnam Sea and practically contribute to maintaining peace and stability in the sea, he added.
