Contest for Southeast Asian composers launched

Goethe Institut in Southeast Asia is calling for young composers of the region to join its third “Young Composers in Southeast Asia” competition.

The contest is open to composers from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam who must submit their up to 5-minute-long entries at the Goethe-Institut Bangkok by July 31. All participants must be born after 1st of April 1978.

An international jury will select ten outstanding pieces which will be discussed in a workshop in Bangkok in December. Their composers will be invited to this workshop. After the workshop, the international jury will make a final decision and award three winners.

Participants can use western instruments including flute, oboe, clarinet, percussion, piano, violin, viola and cello.

Each composer may include one local instrument/player of his/her respective cultural realm, provided that he/she can name a player who is able to cooperate with the western musicians and will be present during the final workshop.
