-- Pham Quang Hieu, Counselor of the Vietnamese Permanent Mission to the United Nations (UN) has been elected as a rapporteur to the UN’ sixth (Legal) Committee at the recent 67th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. Hieu will engage in dealing with legal issues like collecting and making reports, as well as submitting draft Resolutions to the UN General Assembly for approval.
-- Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan is leading a Vietnamese delegation to attend the 14th Francophone Summit in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo, from October 12-14.
Society:
-- Hundreds of crocodiles which have escaped from the crocodile farm of Quoc Viet Co in Ca Mau City, raising the worries of local people about the risk of being attack by those reptiles. Only 47 out of them have just been reported to be caught by local people. A team of hunters from the neighboring province of Bac Lieu are joining force with local police in hunting down the remaining crocodiles hiding around local ditches, ponds and farms.
-- Working together in cooperatives will enable farmers to buy agricultural utilities at more attractive prices, lower production expenditures and generate more profit from their work, said Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Bui Ba Bong at an event held in the run up to the 32nd World Food Day falling on October 16.
-- A project to detect and clear bombs, mines and unexploded ordnance (UXO), funded by the US Government through the Mines Advisory Group (MAG), has been commenced in Binh Minh Commune, Thang Binh District in the central province of Quang Nam from now until the end of 2014.
Business:
-- The term "Phu Quoc", which has been officially registered as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for naturally fermented Vietnamese fish extract, will be added to the list of more than 1,000 names of agricultural products and foodstuffs protected as either PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) or PDO.
It is the eleventh non-EU product name to receive the protected status, following Colombian coffee, Indian Darjeeling tea and eight Chinese products.
-- President of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) Vu Tien Loc has called on the Vietnamese businesspeople to unite to sharpen their competitive edge in the global market.

-- Over 1,700 domestic and foreign representatives have attended a meeting in Hanoi in response to Global Hand-washing Day - October 15.
