Several important cooperation agreements were inked between Hanoi and Vientiane at the 39th meeting of the Vietnam-Laos Inter-Governmental Committee held in the Vietnamese capital on February 7 and 8.

The gathering was co-chaired by Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his Laotian counterpart Thongloun Sisoulith, and attended by 30 ministries and state agencies from both nations.

Speaking at the event, PM Phuc reiterated that Vietnam would always exert all efforts to assist Laos in national development, and to strengthen the two countries’ bilateral ties and effective coordination at regional and global forums.

The two leaders expressed their satisfaction with the effective implementation of high-level agreements and deals between the two nations in 2016.

Bilateral ties across political, diplomatic, national defense and security, and economic and socio-cultural fields have been enhanced.

Regarding cooperation in the future, the two parties agreed on boosting ties in politics, foreign affairs, defense and security, investment, and trade, striving for a 10 percent increase in trade turnover in 2017.

Collaboration in human resources, traffic infrastructure, and the sustainable use of natural resources will also be cemented.

The Vietnamese government will continue to provide favorable conditions for local businesses to operate in Laos, Phuc said.

He believed that the meeting would create the motivation for further development in the Vietnam-Laos friendship and cooperation.

Prime Minister Sisoulith vowed to cooperate with Vietnam to raise public awareness of the Vietnam-Laos special solidarity, especially among their young generations.

Following the meeting, the two premiers witnessed the signing of four documents, including an agreement on cooperation in 2017 between the two governments, the minutes of the Vietnam-Laos Inter-Governmental Committee’s 39th meeting, a collaboration plan between the two education ministries, and the minutes on the establishment of a joint venture to build a 500kV power transmission line connecting the two countries.
