Vietnam welcomes the vote by those countries approving the United Nations General Assembly’s resolution that calls on the U.S. to lift its embargo against Cuba, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Le Hai Binh said on Thursday. Binh made the statement in reply to reporters’ queries in Hanoi on the fact that the UN on Tuesday adopted a non-binding resolution requesting the U.S. to end the embargo, according to the Vietnam News Agency. It is inappropriate to maintain the embargo against Cuba, Binh said, stressing that it should be shortly removed to satisfy the legitimate aspirations, and ensure the interests, of both Cuban and U.S. citizens and contribute to the maintenance of peace and stability in the Americas. Ambassador Le Hoai Trung, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, also said on Thursday that the Southeast Asian country always supports the ending of the U.S. embargo against Cuba as well as advocates the rights of the people of Cuba to choose their path of development. The ambassador’s statement was given at the 68th session of the UN General Assembly under Agenda Item 40 “The necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the U.S. against Cuba” in New York on October 29.
The Vietnamese diplomat also told the session that the embargo has obviously caused enormous damage to the socio-economic development of Cuba and the lives of the country’s people, especially women and children. “For all the numerous and updated reports of the negative impacts of the embargo, the human suffering should undoubtedly be immeasurable. It is an encroachment upon human rights,” Ambassador Trung said.
